HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION
Introduction
If you're anything like us, you've seen engagement photos and thought: "I want that!" I mean, who doesn't dream of having the perfect shot with their partner? But how do you go about getting those pictures? It's easy to look at all the pictures on Instagram and feel overwhelmed. So here are some tips to help get your dream shoot off the ground!
Get to know your photographer.
As you go through the process of choosing a photographer, make sure that you have a good rapport with them. You want to be comfortable with your photographer and get along well—that way, it will show in your photos! Also, make sure they understand what kind of photos you are looking for so that they can give you what you want.
Make sure you feel comfortable with your photographer.
-
If you haven't met the photographer in person or at least through a video chat, do so before booking their services. As part of our booking process, one of our very first steps is to set up a brief phone or video call so we can quickly start creating that connection as human beings, not just as a simple business transaction ugh!
-
Ask them how they will capture your love story. Will it be more candid or staged?
-
Never sign any contract without reading it thoroughly and asking for clarification if needed.
Make the most of a location that means something to you.
You've probably heard the saying, "It's all about the journey, not the destination." But when it comes to engagement photos, sometimes it's all about the location.
-
Ask your photographer if they have any specific recommendations for shooting locations, if you are getting your engagement session in Jersey city, there are plenty of really nice spots especially if you are looking forward to having the skyline view of New York City as background, or if you are probably looking for something more urban Hoboken, Weehawken could be considered as well.
-
Do some research on locales that mean something special to both of you as well as potential backdrops for photos— maybe you both are pizza lovers, There's always a good excuse for eating your favorite pizza isn't right? and then narrow down your list based on practical considerations like crowds and lighting conditions at different times of the day. If you're planning a shoot during sunset or sunrise hours when there may be fewer people around than usual, make sure there aren't any other limitations such as closed roads or no parking nearby!
Wear what you love.
As you head to your engagement photo shoot, wear something that represents you and your partner. Be it a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, or something more formal. Wear what makes you feel good. When it comes to wardrobe choices for this kind of photography session, let your personality shine through!
Keep in mind that you'll probably be posing for photos for several hours—so if there's any chance that clothing will become uncomfortable, it's better to go with something else. Remember: "Comfort is key" applies here!
It can also help if you pick out clothes that highlight features of your body such as a neckline or sleeve length so they look their best in photographs. Wearing an outfit with colors similar to those featured on your engagement ring is another great idea; especially if they match each other perfectly!
Be yourselves and have fun!
It's important to remember that the goal of engagement photography is for it to be fun. You don't have to follow the rules and you don't need to make sure you get every shot you want in one session; after all, engagement photography is about capturing real moments between two people who are in love!
Some great tips for creating an authentic experience:
-
Be yourselves and have fun! If you get nervous or awkward posing for photos, try doing something silly or unexpected (like jumping into a bed full of balloons), which will help put everyone at ease.
-
Be relaxed. Your photographer can tell when someone is uncomfortable (even if they don't say anything), so take deep breaths, loosen up, and smile! Remember that this is supposed to be fun—you're celebrating your upcoming marriage with your fiancé(e).
